Serena Kelly Sutherland

Serena is the owner of d and h which has offices in both Kirkwall and Thurso. Serena Sutherland joined Drever & Heddle as the Firm was then known in 2003 and has worked her way up through the company becoming sole proprietor in 2016 and Partner in 2018 when the Firm became an LLP . As a solicitor, she has special interest in the area of family law and, in particular, with helping clients resolve issues around separation and children in a positive and efficient manner. In addition, Serena deals with general dispute resolution including debt recovery; Guardianships and Adults with Incapacity; the purchase and sale of property both domestic and commercial; leases including commercial leases; Power of Attorney; Wills and Executries.

Serena is also responsible for the general running of the Firm and anyone with any general queries can contact her or Samantha Miller for assistance.

Serena is part of The Office of the Public Guardian’s Professional Guardian scheme and is regularly appointed as Financial Guardian for people who have lost their ability to make decisions for themselves where there is no one else that can assist.

Serena also acts as a Safeguarder appointed by Children 1st to safeguard the interests of children in the Children’s Hearing system- both during the Hearings and in Court proceedings relating to the Children’s Hearings. Serena also acts as Curator ad Litem to children in Adoption and other proceedings. Serena is able to prepare Bar Reports at the request of the Sheriff Court in proceedings that relate to children.

Serena is a Law Society Council Member and a member of the Complaints Sub-Committee of the Law Society of Scotland. She also is an accredited Family Mediator and Notary Public.

Serena is based in our Kirkwall office travelling to Thurso regularly to support our clients in Caithness and Sutherland.

Outside of work Serena sits on the board of the Pickaquoy Trust, Relationships Scotland and is a legal advisor to the Island Games Committee organising the 2023 Island Games in Orkney. Serena lives in Stromness and enjoys seeing friends, walking her dog Roxy (who is also in the office most days), reading, the cinema and travelling; her latest trips having taken her to Morocco and America.
